I was thinking this also - I was going to send an email to the local faculty who are responsible for the GIS curriculum at each local school, and also offer to speak or help get students started (first edit sessions can be frustrating). It's important to keep the mail as low key and let the faculty decide if it's worth a mention in class or as an extra credit project.
