My personal opinion is that it's way too often used inappropriately but
that there's a place for it. It was introduced in a very bad way to
users and this is the basis behind the abuse. How can they have it on by
default in OE for example. How can they have fixed settings to compose
in HTML format in the first place?!! I do send HTML messages at times
but it's rare and only when I really need the HTML abilities.

 Go to the Options menu and toggle off 'HTML autoview'. This will
 display the message in plane text initially by default. If you look at
 the bottom of the message view window of an HTML formatted message,
 you'll see two tabs. Clicking on one displays the plain text version
 while the other displays the HTML formatted version.
