Hi!

The author seems to be making a bit of a mountain out of a molehill in his piece which I've linked to here.

Perhaps Jonathan isn't aware of the wonderful world of SDR - Software Defined
Radio -, stick one in the dock of your iPhone, run the App and there you are!
wopnderful FM radio in fact wonderful whatever you like type radio, so long as
the Software can tune to it then all you have to do is to sit back and enjoy.
The great thing about these dongals is that they cost so little for general
purpose use - around $10 - and next to nothing - somethings nothing - for the
associated App - depending on what you wish to listen to or other radio
application -.
Would FM radio be handy in emergency use? Well maybe and maybe not, in all the
devices I've used with a built-in FM radio reception has never been a strong
point so - if emergency listening is something you're really concerned about -
then you'd do much better I should think to take a dedicated radio along with
you on your travels and here we come again to SDR.
Many of today's FM radio sets are both cheap, and good performers thanks to the
fact that they run using a SDR scheme.
They are also small - many of them pocket sized -.
