Hi Everyone.
I received the phone on Friday and have been exploring this treasurebox over
the weekend and present a few notes on my experience with this phone for your
reference.
From the outset of my exploration I was under no illutions whatever that the
S20 Ultra is indeed a powerhouse however I had to make tweaks to the phone to
get the best out of it, you certainly won’t enjoy the S20 experience right out
of the box I’m afraid.
The setup wizard is flexible and straight forward as one would expect from
Samsung giving you plenty of configuration options for your phone, allowing you
to copy data from an old phone to the new and so on so its after the setup has
finished that the fun and games may begin.
The Samsung launcher for the S20 phone is amongst the most inaccessible
launches I’ve yet come across.
Yes you can get about the screens but I think this was only because I knew my
way around and knew what I should expect on the Home Screen and where so the
first thing that has to be done is to install another launcher, one that is
more accessible.
I chose the Hyperion Launcher and didn’t’ look back, it seemed to be the
missing switch to turn on in order to bring the Samsung S20 Ultra to life.
I also quit running Samsung’s Voice Assistant Screen Reader in favour of Google
Talkback as Talkback has more to offer me from this phone, only a personal
opinion of course.
As to whether or not anyone should take the time and trouble to buy this phone?
Well that Is a truly personal opinion too, I happened to be I the right place
at the right time when I purchased mine, in the lobby of the phone company
where I was made a most tempting offer I couldn’t refuse <smile>
The S20 isn’t for everyone and if you’re not prepared to spend some time with
the phone doing the odd tweak and the odd modification here and there then you
truly won’t get much out of the phone – makes me wonder why Samsung are
bothering at all with the Voice Assistant Screen reader if this is the sort of
accessibility you get from the phone by default -.
My favourite phones right out of the box for the true accessibility experience
are the Google Pixel phones, they just work from setup to practical use with
Talkback.
If yo udon’t want a Google phone then you may wish to checkout the Google Plex,
a truly value for money box of kit that in many areas wipes the floor with the
big boys including the areas of useability and accessibility.
