Dieter: Julian wasn't having problems with MusiXTeX
commands. His problems (resolved off-list) were:

  + using 32bit MiKTeX on a 64bit Windows system

+ using etex rather than latex for a latex score

+ using blank lines in the middle of a score

That's an html version of the man page.

Installation instructions for MiKTeX users are at

http://icking-music-archive.org/software/htdocs/Getting_Started_Four_Scenar.html

i.e.,

Find the relevant MiKTeX package manager in the Start
menu; click on it. A window listing thousands of MiKTeX
package opens. Enter "musixtex" into the Name field and
click on Filter. Click on Select All in the Edit menu so
that both packages are highlighted and click on the + sign
(for "add"). Then repeat this process for "pmx" and "m-tx"
(selecting only packages not yet installed).
