Lots of improvements have been done in thunderbird module during last 1 month. can you please update your extra_addons and check again.
In archive mails we have new field section and there are 2 buttons. attachment and create case. you can search on objects, select record and create case for that mail in selected section or attach mail to selected record as .eml format.
