Flagellation was practiced when I was a student at the Trappist Monastery at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky.But it only took place during Holy Week. The monastic bell would ring to begin the process and ring again to cease. It did not last too long. The trappist were called Order of he Cistercians of the Strict Observance from Citeaux ,France. I missed the Gregorian Chant and of course my novice master at that time the late Thomas Merton (Gone but not forgotten) Michael Sylvester,PhD Daytona Beach,Florida
