Wow. What timing. I was away for the weekend and I missed this whole thread, but I think I've got another tool that could address this issue of how to get students or profs to create experiments (I just sent this out to the PsychTeacher list so excuse the cross posting). A couple years ago I discovered this little tool called a "Sproutbuilder" which at that time just created little widgets. Well, they really been building this tool out and now it has all kinds of capability. I was playing with it recently and I thought: this could be used to create all kinds of neat online experiments in ways that are a lot better than using Powerpoint. The cool thing about using this sprout tool is that it's online and students could get a lot more data. I really think it's worth checking out.
