Both positions begin September 2002. Applicants must have a strong interest in quality undergraduate teaching, be committed to liberal arts education, and demonstrate the potential to develop an active undergraduate research program that strengthens St. Olaf's well-established summer research program. BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT POSITION The Biology Department position is at the Assistant Professor rank with primary teaching responsibility in an Introduction to Neuroscience course. Candidates should also be able to teach Introductory Biology, a mid-level course such as Invertebrate Biology, Animal Physiology, or Human Anatomy and Physiology, and an upper level Neuroscience Seminar. Although a research program in all areas of neuroscience will be considered, preference will be given to those using electrophysiological techniques. Candidates must have a Ph.D. and demonstrated teaching experience; postdoctoral research experience is strongly desired. The Biology Department has 14 faculty members and graduates approximately 90 majors each year. The department is well-equipped for teaching and research with over 50 computers located throughout the department and a broad assortment of spectrophotometers, microscopes (including fluorescent and atomic force microscopes), centrifuges, and general cell culture and molecular biology equipment. Research is supported by individual and institutional research grants from agencies such as NIH, NSF, HHMI, and Merck. The appointment will be made at either the Assistant or Associate Professor rank. Introduction to Neuroscience is a primary teaching responsibility. Candidates should also be able to teach Introductory Psychology (with an associated lab), the mid-level Biological Psychology course, and an upper level Neuroscience Seminar. Candidates must have the Ph.D. The Psychology Department has nine faculty members and graduates approximately 70 majors each year. The department has a track record of externally funded curriculum development and research and ranks 17th in the nation among undergraduate colleges as a source of Ph.D.s in Psychology. There is an undergraduate research endowment that funds joint faculty-student research. The department has good facilities to support research and teaching including animal facilities, computer-driven, sound-isolated operant chambers, microscopes, and psychophysiological recording workstations.
