Without more details, I'm guess the problem with the SSL standalone configuration is the same as http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=21763.
Fronting Tomcat with Apache avoids the bug above, but as anyone who has been on this list at least a day knows, it comes with its own worm-can ;-).
