Thanks. I should have mentioned that I am running Tomcat 4.1.24 with jdk1.3.0_02.
I did want to make use of the Tomcat features for authentication (i.e. FROM method, Realm using user/roles DB tables, web.xml configuration etc.) to replace existing code that I wrote for the task.
