I'm looking more for something that sits on the actual servers and probes at set intervals and takes remedial action if necessary.. i just wondered if anyone had documented doing such a thing before.

JMeter has a monitor for tomcat 5.0.19 and newer. It doesn't work with tomcat4 or older. in terms of restarting, you're probably going to have to write a shell script to do that. Typically, on unix a cron job is used.
