I had this problem with but i was only using one generic nic, think its was
a KTX or something. Then i changed to 3COM and it works great. But then
again i wasnt using dual nics :)

You need to have the appropriate drivers. When the module is loaded
the driver looks for the NIC and if it is found a message is returned.
Some NICs are there but others require the driver module to be
added to the disk. It's been a while since I looked but I thought
the scripts tried to load all the modules on the disk. Not recognizing
your NIC could happen if you use a card that needs a different
driver than the stock set.
What brand of NICs are you trying to use?
