Actually my wife was kind of quoting me (and put my name on the bottom of her post). I was speaking about the Hebrew Oral tradition that was eventually (and rather quickly) written/translated into Greek and the translated into English. It's a mistake to understand idiomatic language word for word. It needs to be understood phrase by phrase.   "I'm going to stay up until the cows come home"  means "I'm going to stay up really late."
