Which conf directory?

I recently discovered the Genapp target -- way cool, thanks.

By default, Maven sets maven.conf.dir to ${basedir}/conf, but the
Genapp target creates ${basedir}/src/conf (without resetting
maven.conf.dir in project.properties).

What is the preferred/correct/popular location for the conf directory?
