I work for a company that has @90 customers still using shims/ultimate
(80 on ultplus/HP and 11 on jBase/Linux) sadly we are no longer selling
ultimate/shims as we are moving to a VB.net system using unidata as the
back-end (developed by a company we acquired)

At this point, there are probably 300-400 SHIMS systems in existence
throughout the US. Most of these systems are found on Risc boxes now -
Universe, although there are some diehard old Ultimate OS systems out
there too (but they are definitely the minority).
Shortly after Ultimate Data Systems was acquired by NxTrend Technology
in 1993, SHIMS development ceased. NxTrend offers a Progress-based
wholesale distribution package called Trend. A few years ago, NxTrend
was acquired by another large software company (name unknown). I'm not
sure if NxTrend (whoever the parent company is) is still offering
support of SHIMS.
I worked for Ultimate Data Systems from 1988-1997 in technical support.
After that, I did several years of consulting/contract programming work
for SHIMS users.
