Probably due to a problem introduced with an earlier version of speech-dispatcher. I suggest you update your system, to get the latest speech-dispatcher package. Then once updated, make sure that the /etc/profile.d directory is empty. If thereis a file in there called speech-dispatcher.sh, remove it. Hope this helps.
