so I'm back on ubuntu alpha, this time from live CD image via USB key and the issue is gone. I think it's because on the alternate install image I chose USA > ACER > Eurosign 5 (€) whereas with the live cd image I just chose USA > Eurosign 5 (€) leaving me to believe that even though I have an acer laptop, I shouldn't have chosen Acer for the keyboard layout on the alternate install.
