If there are complains, let there be. Please either add an option at install time (or via the user interface) to disable the PC Speaker's beeping output, _or_ do something like use xkbevd by default in the install.
Personally, I've downloaded a WAV file to use with xkbevd so that my terminals and Pidgin and other applications that beep at me, still do so. The beep is better now, so thanks for prodding me in that direction, but this is still something that should not be taken away. (Actually, the workaround only works when you're in X, of course; if you're on a console, the workaround will *not* work, and so there should still be an install-time option to disable the PC Speaker for people that simply don't want to hear it.) This is definitely a bug; this functionality is expected in an install, and if it isn't present (particularly on a server) one cannot hear when something goes wrong. I use the system beep on my server at home, for example, to call attention to system issues. This default functionality is quite important to have. In any case, workaround for GUI users: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Virtual_PC_Speaker (see the section on xkbevd). -- linux 2.6.27-2.3: pcspkr should be enabled too, now that snd-pcsp is blacklisted by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/263747 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
