more research: I changed the hal definition for the Sierra Aircard 881 (10-modem.fdi) so that the modem capability points to /dev/ttyUSB2 instead of /dev/ttyUSB0. Tried with unpatched NetworkManager. The connection got initiated but immediately after the modem hung up. Who knows why ... Giving up now and keeping the patched NetworkManager as described in the earlier message.
