I'm not clear why, but PulseAudio is still starting. I have two accounts on the computer, and had to go into each one to disable pulseaudio in the Sessions dialog box, but after installing some updates this morning it was running. I verified that the checkbox was still empty, and killed the Pulseaudio process, and the sound came back immediately. :-/
