I'm seeing roughly the same issue on my laptop:

When I plugin my USB external hard drive, it will not be auto-mounted.

Symptoms:
1) `dmesg | tail -f` shows the following:
[ 842.812160] usb 7-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
[ 848.456765] usb 7-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

2) lsusb shows the following:

3) I have only 1 drive in my laptop so I expect any new drives to be at
/dev/sdb. But `sudo fdisk /dev/sdb` gives the following:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~]$ sudo fdisk /dev/sdb

[sudo] password for wongcs:

I have 3 USB external hard drives (those casings where you cram in a
hard drive; 2 IDE + 1 SATA) and none of them are mountable. However, I
have a USB multi-card reader with a CF card plugged in and another
Kingston USB thumbdrive which are mounted with no issues.

As a matter of comparison, the following is noted when I plug in the thumbdrive:
1) sudo tail -f /var/log/mesages (equivalent to `dmesg | tail -f`)

3) sudo fdisk /dev/sdb
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~]$ sudo fdisk /dev/sdb

                                      (11-09 14:04)

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 15744.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sdb: 4127 MB, 4127195136 bytes

Units = cylinders of 512 * 512 = 262144 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

/dev/sdb1 1 15744 4030448 b W95 FAT32

My system configuration:
1) Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
2) 4GB RAM
3) Intel X300 video card
4) Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 AMD64 (fully updated as of 9th Nov 2008; same behavior
observed before and after updates)

Other observations:
1) The same behaviour is displayed in Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10 so I don't think
it's Gnome / KDE specific
