It seems the mic and capture inputs were all set to the lowest setting. I installed gnome-alsamixer and changed the settings according to this post by ruppertus: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/microphone-doesnt-work-intel-hd-audio-619337/
