Reinstalling the newer kernel did the trick. I was lucky I had a second kernel in the boot partition! I'm not an expert and I'm not sure if this problem really has to do with initram, but I think it's a serious problem if an error during file copy can lead to an unbootable system. I guess this is probably more a Linux than a Ubuntu problem, but the average user would'nt have known what to do in this situation.
