I have a similar problem with a Thinkpad X61s. I was originally running Intrepid after dist-upgrading from Hardy, and everything worked fine.
I recently installed Intrepid from scratch (to remove program cruft and various other reasons) and things haven't been behaving nicely since, especially when undocked. In addition to the freezing problem above, if I try to boot while undocked my extra partitions don't mount and the default boot manager (gdm) won't launch. Notably, the fresh installation produced an empty xorg.conf file, so I don't know what X is reading for its configuration. Though this file doesn't seem necessary since X launches if I boot when docked...
