I have a similar problem. I run Ubuntu 8.04 on my HP Compaq nx6325 with kernel 2.6.24-19-generic. When I update to a newer one (eg. 2.6.24-22-generic), install the new STA driver, restart and login, the machine connects to my WLAN (AVM FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7141) and crashes: my screen gets dark, I only see the cursor but can't move it. The keyboard shows CAPSLOCK enabled. In other environments (other router) it worked.
