I have had this problem and reported but they linked it with this bug, and i havent even got a X40.
I have a Toshiba Satellite L40-17U and the screen is a LG Philips. I have Ubuntu 8.10 and the screen dimms with or wilthout the AC power. If anyone needs more information on my Laptop please ask.
