I just found out what was the problem. I had two versions of libGL in
/usr/lib: libGL.so.1.2 and libGL.so.1.2.bak. Symlink libGL.so.1 was
pointing to that .bak file. After changing it to point to libGL.so.1.2
and deleting .bak file direct rendering is finally enabled.

I have no idea what .bak file was doing there. Probably intrepid
installer messed something up and left old version of libGL.
