I just found that the 1.0.18 version of the ALSA drivers does not work to provide audio over HDMI, at least not for nVidia cards. Using nvidia- glx-180 and manually installing ALSA driver 1.0.19 makes an HDMI audio device show up actually. Given that more and more systems coming with HDMI now these days, it would probably be important.
