This problem seems to affect the Intel ICHx-sound controllers, I've got the very same issue on my iMac 24" (8,1) The microphone (and mic boost-checkbox) did work with the Intrepid RC but at some time in the last few months I believe an ALSA-update broke it. I've put many hours into solving this problem, tried different configurations (in the ALSA-config-file) and different settings but couldn't get it to work...
