Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

I try to open the volume control and two error messages come up:

The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control.
This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins
installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.

No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.

$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:215: no soundcards found...

$ find /lib/modules/`uname -r` | grep snd
find /lib/modules/`uname -r`: No such file or directory

I try this too but it doesn't seem to make a difference:
$ sudo aptitude install linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` linux-generic

$ lspci -v | less
