i spoke to ben collins about this (kernel guy), and apparently the i386 kernel in feisty has been upgraded to have uni-processor generic cpu support, thus virtully the same kernel as the default "generic" kernel with an expected performace loss of about 1%. I suspect that this problem will not be chased, and this new i386 has been provided as the solution to such problems. With this problem, seeming being isolated to Asus and Sony PM notebooks, i sure they will just let the problem disappear into obsolecence. (the M6a and FS might even be the same notebook, i know that Asus is an OEM to many notebook manufacturers)
