Update: I just did a fresh install of XP on my affected machine (part of preparation for reoganization what's on my system), inserted a freshly burned CD of 9.04, 64-bit (downloaded from Cannonical)
Surprise surprise, no sign of the previous error messages. I don't have time to pinpoint the exact reason for the problems on my machine at the moment (whether it's malware or conflict with something else installed on my system) but will post any additional clues as they come to mind. If doing a fresh install of XP (or whatever) is too drastic, then the links already provided by Agostino Russo might be able to provide a few ideas to check.
