There is the command "patch", you'll find a short tutorial on it on http://www.linuxtutorialblog.com/post/introduction-using-diff-and-patch- tutorial .
The file you need to apply the patch to is /var/lib/dpkg/info/irda-utils.postinst Or at least with patching this one the installation worked for me.
