Several points: First I am rather new to Ubuntu and Firefox.
Second I am now using Epiphany. Third, I tried to do as you suggested (I
think I did it right). After closing Firefox , I later tried to reopen it
and got a window with the note that Firefox was already running (a shock to
me as there were no other indications) and that I must close the current
session in order to open another. The window reappeared at every attempt of
mine to open OR close the Firefox window that I could not find.
Since the notice window gave the alternative of restarting my system, I did
so. Three times. On each occasion the same notice window reappeared.
I could find no other indication that Firefox WAS running. I could not find
a way to terminate the ghost session.
Finally, I went to the Synaptic Package Manager and removed Firefox. I will
reinstall it when an upgrade is available. Meanwhile I will use Epiphany.
Thanks for trying to help me, but I haven't had any good results since the
problem first suddenly appeared.
