Same problem here, but on sata disks. No USB. Running amd64 Karmic but
with 2.6.28-11-generic kernel from Jaunty, as the 2.6.30 fails to boot
on my box.

Strace of the blkid processes gives no output, so they're just spinning.

Worth noting is that this kernel hangs for about 5 minutes during boot,
around here:
