I also have the same problem with my positivo Z896. It has a RTL8187b and I can only browse if I am close to the AP. Now I am runing Jaunty 9.04 with last updates and also tried ubuntu-backports-modules-jaunty, but the most I got was to browse in the same room. If I change the room I cannot even connect.
