New finding:

Based on a friends Ubuntu 7.04 content of /etc/modules containing fuse,
which I have no idea what it pertains to, I added that entry also to my
Ubuntu 9.04 /etc/modules and found that my ntfs external drive would
then mount. I unmounted, unplugged the drive and plugged it back in and
it mounted several times in a row. I then tried to mount my 500GB ext3
drive and found it would not mount at all. I tried with the drive
powered up both before and after plugging it in and even tried booting
the system with the drive connected and could not get it to mount, nor
could I find anywhere an error message or indication the system had any
knowledge at all of the drives existence.

I've never before had an external drive using an ext3 file system so
this may be normal for previous versions of ubuntu as well as the 9.04
version, so I will probably try to find a way to reformat the drive to
ntfs in hopes that a solution for that file system can be found.

Can someone confirm that /etc/modules is a place where I should be
making changes, and if the changes I'm making are correct, and why must
I, a user have to make edits in this area of the system to begin with?
