Thanks for your reporting. Can you tell us which version of dosfstools
you are using, because recently a few bugs were fixed in Feisty's
version.
I also note that you said: "if you stop the check for /dev/hda1", does
the file system actually have a problem?
Can you please attach the output of:
dosfsck -v -n <partition>
