This is fixed in Pidgin 2.5.7, but that is not yet in Ubuntu. Yahoo changed their connection system. Go to Accounts, select account, click Modify. In the Advanced tab change your Paging server to cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com or 66.163.181.172 - they have been reported to work (and do so in my case).
