I have the same problem on a new installation of 9.04 (32-bit). It seems to happen more often when audacity is playing, and so I initially tried to file a bug under that app.
Typically, I'll be at work, with several gnome-terminal windows open and several firefox windows. If I play some music with audacious, after a while, everything freezes. Well, not EVERYTHING, but a lot of stuff. All of the gnome-terminal windows are solid black with no updates, and the time in the top gnome panel is not being updated. I think gkrellm also freezes. But the mouse work. I installed the "run button" applet on my top gnome panel so I can click it and do a quick "killall audacious". At this point, the log jam clears and everything is back to normal. Very annoying behavior, but glad to have found a work-around.
