Also, I don't know what is NetworkManager doing, but with some USB WiFi cards (not all of them), using Linux's default driver, when I connect to anything (ad-hoc or infrastructure), it seems that it makes the interface go down. It only appears in "ifconfig -a", and "sudo ifconfig wlan up" returns "access denied".
