I also tried disabling the SATA Native Mode, which can be found in the BIOS just like Ron B. suggested, but like riledhel it did not work for me.
May be noteworthy, the new Linux Mint 7 LiveCD installs fine, which is somewhat strange to me as it is very heavily based on Jaunty. Still, that is not really the ultimate answer for me, as I'm really looking for the additional options of the alternative install CD.
