I also tried with 2.6.30-2, but from the repository (linux-image-2.6.30-2 package), not by compiling it myself. It was for an unrelated bug (to confirm that inotify is broken in 2.6.31-5) and incidentally I noticed the same behavior with the CPU fan. I didn't had the time and bandwidth (very scarce in the region where I live, indeed) to try with a 2.6.27 (or previous) kernel. Hopefully you find a solution.
