Based on the Digikam changelog it might have been solved in either 0.9.5 (KDE3) or 0.10 (KDE4) or both. Which is not very useful if you're using hardy.
Seems like upgrading to Jaunty (which has the 0.10 version) is the only solution. The dependencies of the 0.10 version are so complex that backporting it would probably be difficult.
