If you can't reproduce the issue under a live cd, I'm going to have you reinstall ubuntu (to a different partition, or however you want to do it), and then install a different kernel. I would expect that to 'solve' the issue right there; that will allow us to determine if the issue is solved under karmic, and to eventually work out exactly which changes caused the issue.
