** Description changed:
- Binary package hint: dbus
-
- Karmic (xubuntu-desktop), latest updates, after reboot, graphical login does
not start.
- Karmic is running inside a Virtualbox 3.0.6 (closed source edition) session,
so I can't run apport from inside there, since the network is not working.
+ Karmic, latest updates, after reboot, graphical login does not start and
+ the user is dropped to a tty.
Message at startup:
init: Unable to connect to the system bus: Failed to connect to socket
/var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory
Interesting message in dmesg:
NetworkManager[1459]: segfault at aaaaaaaa ip 00784832 sp bfd9d2a0 error
4 in libdbus-glib-1.so.2.1.0[778000+1e000]
- I'm also affected by bug #430654.
+
+ This fixed the problem the next day:
+ #ubuntu-bugs
+ < davmor2> try booting up till you get dropped into the console and type:
sudo ifconfig eth0 up and then sudo dhclient then try a dist-upgrade and see if
that fixes it for you.
+
+
+ ===========
+ The system appears to have been updated while the archive was unstable and
dbus was not actually installed on the system, or at least not entirely
installed on the system.
+
+ Lack of dbus caused hald and NetworkManager to fail to load, killing
+ 'magic internets.'
+
+ /etc/network/interfaces was empty minus lo which caused eth0 not so show
+ up in ifconfig. This caused me to think that eth0 was not active.
+
+ Lesson1: In the absence of dbus the system fails to be user friendly.
+ Lesson2: In the absence of Network Manager, ifconfig will not report the
existence of eth0.
+ Lesson3: Even alpha6 means potential breakage!! Use at your own peril. :)
