Can't reproduce with GPL Ghostscript 8.64 (Ubuntu 9.04), no problem with
20071011150023.pdf and no problem with deso07.pdf.

You are using a 64 bit machine now and Ubuntu 9.04, do you get the same
ghostscript error?

Can you try if this is still a problem in Ubuntu 9.04? You can use the live cd
to test before installing.
