Contrary to my comment #17, I continue to experience this problem with 1.0.2-0ubuntu1on karmic: on startup, the icon shows the exclamation mark, but can be connected manually. On two jaunty machines, 1.0.1+r257-0ubuntu1~ppa1~jaunty autoconnects all right.
