Public bug reported:

I am using Karmic, and sometimes (50%) the x server fails to load at boot time.
I cannot switch to virtual terminals, and i have to poweroff it manually.
After rebooting, the /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old file is totally empty, it's size
is 0 byte.
